This post marks the return of my picture-taking, food-writing habits. I'm sorry I've been away so long, but England rather sucked me in and wouldn't let me continue my blogging ways. My European extravaganza has been extremely successful and though I've left England almost a month ago, I've continued my pattern of being on the road - or rather, in the air - since then. However for the last couple of weeks I have settled once more in Hong Kong.<br>

A few months ago I discovered <a href="http://www.eatthispoem.com/">eatthispoem</a>, a blog brimming with beautiful writing, photos and recipes. The lovely blog owner Nicole has started her own series of literary city guides which she describes as a travel resource for 'bookworms who love to eat' - which is me in a nutshell, isn't it? So seeing that she hadn't gotten one for Sydney yet I jumped at the chance to try my hand at writing a guide, and the result is now live. So <a href="http://www.eatthispoem.com/city-guides/sydney">head on over</a> and make sure you check out all the other amazing cities as well!</div>

I had the best intentions and several blog posts lined up for December of last year, but somehow, they never got finished. Which is sad, really, because I had a shortbread recipe and a cupcake recipe that I made in preparation for Christmas that would have made great gifts, and I was going to share a recipe for gingerbread (and on making gingerbread houses) as well as strawberry shortcake that was part of my family's Christmas feast last year. I've been so busy lately though that it just hasn't happened.<br>

My blog now has abandonment issues. The last few weeks have been crazy, but if you asked I actually wouldn't be able to pinpoint exactly why. Just a combination of work, multiple uni assignments and admittedly a little loss of my blogging mojo. It wasn't until I flicked back to my earlier posts that I realized in four days, I would have had this blog for exactly one year. One year! Seriously, where's the time gone?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's always interesting when you move to a new country that speaks the same language as you, but seemingly in an entirely new way. I'm still slightly amazed that after five years in Sydney, my own American-influenced English hasn't changed a bit, and I'm often told by old friends and family (in almost accusatory tones) that I <i>still </i>sound the same. I have, however, learned to adapt locally where necessary. For example, data (<i>day-ta</i>) became <i>dah-ta, </i>and scones (rhyming with 'own') became <i>sco-h-nes </i>(rhyming with 'on'). If you've followed me for a while, you'll probably also notice spelling discrepancies - I realized while editing this post that I switched between 'favorite' and 'favourite' about four times. Once out of Australia, however, my habits slip back to what it used to be. Maybe some subconscious part of my mind is just adamant against change?</div>

It's been a while (again)! But I have a better excuse this time; I've been away to my hometown Hong Kong (again) over my uni break and in going to the opposite hemisphere I left my blogging duties behind (yes, again). It isn't that I haven't been baking, either - I made a total of three cakes in three weeks of which I only took photos of two, but neither were particularly blog-worthy. And while it seems that writing a post on walnuts after one on pecans is overly nutty (pun intended - I'm hilarious), these candied walnuts are amazing. But more on that in a sec.</div>

I have an attention span problem, particularly when it comes to baking. I can't seem to remake a recipe twice most of the time (there are, of course, exceptions). Once I make a recipe, I taste it, I photograph it, I share it, and then I store it away and move on past it to the next recipe. I can get irritated if I have to remake a recipe multiple times when I could be trying something new.</div>

There's been this little monster of guilt gnawing away at that all-things-baking-related part of my mind telling me that I've been failing miserably at completing my role as part of the Daring Bakers. It wasn't until I looked back on my posts that I realized I'd missed the last three challenges. Uh, whoops. So I went and gathered butter, flour, sugar and some big waxy oranges, and got to work.<br>

It's starting to get cold here in Sydney. Cold and wet, and then cold and sunny. It poured with rain for half of yesterday before the sky decided to somewhat reluctantly let the sun come through. Literally hot and cold. I hate it.</div>

I have never understood this whole 'raw foods' trend. Suddenly everything's being converted into what is essentially its 'healthified' version - vegan, gluten free, sugar free and <i>raw. </i>It's been everywhere lately in the form of cookies, bars and even brownies. And while a part of me thinks it's great to focus on using natural, pure ingredients to achieve a similar result, another part of me can't help thinking that it ruins the fun of baking a little. (I mean to me, baking brownies with chocolate, butter, sugar and flour is what actually makes it the process of baking brownies.) </div>

I don't know about you, but I love discovering new kinds of food through books. Literature has a way of making you look at food differently. In the particular case of jaffa cakes, I discovered their existence when I was about eleven through a book I was reading at the time which unfortunately I can't remember the name of - the protagonist was a young girl who got a role in a theatre and goes through a series of dramas with her friends (as pre-teen books tend to go), but the part that stuck out for me was that her favorite snack was jaffa cakes. </div>

Afternoon tea is a tradition that's been ingrained in me since primary school. At least one afternoon each week, my mother would pick me up and we would go to McDonald's for a teatime treat of french fries, cokes and cheeseburgers (the stuff every kid dreams of). I'm not even kidding; I visited Maccas so often as a kid I managed to collect their practically their entire stuffed Hello Kitty collection, which I don't know if anyone reading this will remember or know about but I had about twenty of those dolls in my room all through primary school. (Then I gave them all away a few years ago.)</div>

Do you have a cafe that you go to frequently as a meeting place? Somewhere that you can call the 'usual place' and others will know what you're referring to? For me and a small group of my closest friends from high school, that would be <a href="http://www.lepainquotidien.com/">Le Pain Quotidien</a>, or as we like to call it more simply, the French cafe.</div>

It's Monday again. It just insists on rolling around every six days, doesn't it? I've been fortunate enough to be on a two week break from classes, but as it's Monday, it means it has officially ended. It's sad news, people.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Luckily I've got something to give you that isn't so sad. Right the opposite. Especially if you love nutella - and come on, who doesn't? - you will absolutely love these cookies. They are dense, chewy and fudgy with a crackly brownie-like top, which isn't surprising considering I've adapted the recipe from these practically infamous <a href="http://savorysweetlife.com/2010/08/4-ingredients-nutella-brownies/">4-ingredient nutella brownie bites</a>. And the best bit is that they can be made, baked and eaten in less than 30 minutes.</div>

It took a while, but it's finally starting to feel like fall here in Sydney. The trees are turning red and fading brown; there's the sharp crunch of dried leaves under your feet as you walk down the street. In the supermarket, piles of apples tower above everything else.</div>

I went to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange,_New_South_Wales">Orange</a> last weekend on a road trip which, while woefully lacking the presence of real oranges, did have plenty of beautiful fall colored trees in various shades of orange, brown and red. It's known as the 'color city' and you can see why.</div>
